Hidrante is excited to present "How Many Clowns Does It Take", an exhibition by Alex Millán and friends.
Clowning has a long history as an art form, dating back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt and Greece. Clowns have been seen as tricksters, fools, and more; however, they are always in control, speak their minds, and can get away with doing so. "How many clowns does it take" is an overview exhibition of 4-years of a particular clown cult leader, Alex Millán, who has been organizing underground clown parties in Puerto Rico and along specific cities in the US (Atlanta, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Oakland, New York City). Through instant photography, performance, stage design, sound, video, and a collaborative approach that integrates friends and colleagues to flesh out ideas larger than life, Millán invites us to a space of inclusivity and diversity that allows us to explore identities beyond the standard social spectrums. The clown falls, so you don't have to.
Alex Millán (b. 1996, Carolina, PR) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist who lives and works between San Juan, PR, New York, US, and all the places in between. At 16, Alex Millán ran away from home to join the circus, literally. Clowning is the focus of their work, and it spans all of their multidisciplinary endeavors in performance, photography, installation, video, sound, and writing.
